Where is God When I Feel Lonely?

Do you feel lonely? Fiona shares how this time of year it can be easy to start feeling isolated in the cold winter months.

”How priceless is Your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.” (Psalm 36:7)

It is so much easier to feel upbeat when you’re around others who cheer you up, or even when the weather isn’t making your pain or illness feel worse. But when those rough days come crashing down upon us, it’s so easy to give up and give in to the loneliness, and wonder “Where are You, God?”

Many of us are in the middle of those cold, dreary winter months, which can put us into a down mood. We long for the days of Spring, the renewal we see in the earth and the hope that with better weather comes less pain. And for those who have little or no family, special days like Valentine’s Day can be just a cruel reminder that we are truly alone in this world.

But, are we really alone? Didn’t the Creator of this universe also feel lonely at one point? So lonely that He decided that He wanted a human race to have interaction with? And here we are.

It’s so easy to get caught up in looking at our own loneliness, but stop and consider that maybe God felt lonely at one point too. Adam, as far as we know, was possibly His first attempt to have interaction with others and that didn’t turn out very well. But still He persisted and created Eve. And, from there the whole human race began.

I came across this video song (below) several months ago, which really spoke to my heart when I was in a place of feeling very lonely, wondering where God was in the midst of it all. But as I watched the video, it struck me that God had created all those images for humanity, not for Himself. He wanted us to be able to enjoy His beautiful creations so that, together, we would be a family.

So, whether you are alone right now, or just feel lonely and forgotten on any other day of the year, watch this video and keep in mind that God, the Creator of the Universe, put this all together for your enjoyment.

Allow it to minister to those deep places in your heart, and instead of focusing on what you don’t have, let it minister God’s love to you and enjoy the beauty of His handiwork. After all, He created it all for you and me to enjoy!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I pray that when I feel lonely You will remind me of Your loving kindness and that You too felt lonely at one point. You wanted love and fellowship from simple creatures such as us and established the heavens and their glory to show us Your immense love for us. Amen.
