“After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and His clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of Him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.'” (Matthew 28: 1-6)
My daughter-in-law peeps her head around the corner of the stairwell and says to me, “You might want to turn on the T.V. There is an interesting show about the Shroud of Turin on. I think you’d like it.”
I turn on the television. Here is a documentary about folks who are not only trying to prove the authenticity of the shroud; they are attempting to use computer magic to recreate the actual face of Jesus.
I watch for a while as they explain the how’s and why’s of what they were doing. Now, I’m not the person to comment on whether or not this can be done–or whether or not the shroud is real. I do have an opinion on the whole subject though.
I had to feel sad for the people who so tenaciously are conducting this search.
Yes, we can search for earthly proof that Jesus lived and died. But, is that the faith that we are called to? To prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jesus was a real man? Do we need to recreate His face in order to believe in Him?
Hebrews 11:1 states: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
Somehow, to me, in their quest, they are missing the most important fact of all.
As they search among the wrappings left behind, they will not truly find Jesus.
Don’t they know? Haven’t they heard?
“I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said.”
If you are looking for Jesus–look up! He is not an image hidden in an ages-old cloth. . . He is not there! He has risen!!
Prayer: Father God, My prayer for each reader is that no matter what circumstance surrounds them today, they may have a Christ-filled Easter today. Amen and amen!
