“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42).
“I really don’t have the money to go to another doctor appointment. I have enough bills as it is.” My thoughts that day kept going. Before I knew it I was thinking about my car and started imagining that it would be taken from me since I paid a month late. Then I started wondering if I would lose my house too someday. All because I had to pay for another doctor appointment copay! Wow, did that get out of hand. In no way did my thoughts help my feelings of unease.
On my way in to work, I heard a speaker talking about the Mary and Martha passage in scripture. Jesus was at their home teaching. As the host Martha prepared the meal and made sure all her guests were taken care of. Her sister Mary however, was not helping Martha at all. She was sitting at Jesus’ feet listening to Him. Martha was distracted by all that she felt she needed to do and complained to Jesus about Mary’s unwillingness to help.
Jesus lovingly reminded Martha that Mary was right in choosing Him over the housework. This was the time to put Jesus first above all else. Worrying did nothing to help Martha’s attitude. All it did was make Martha more upset. When I heard Jesus’ words, “You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed.”
I quickly realized my own sin in letting myself get worked up and worried about my finances. That certainly didn’t help my attitude any, except to make me more moody and sad. What I should have done was leave my concerns at His feet.
I know how hard it is not to worry when we’re chronically ill – especially since every day is a mystery in regards to how we will feel that day. But, Jesus tells us to focus on Him instead. He knows what will do our hearts good!
Prayer: Dear God, I admit I do worry sometimes. . . about everything. But I now lay all my concerns at Your feet. Please touch my heart and turn my worry into Love for You! Amen.
