Oh No! Another New Year!

“In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. . . Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but is the Lord’s purpose that prevails,” (Proverbs 16:9, 19:21).

I can’t believe another year has gone by! I keep saying this over and over lately. There are so many things I wanted to get done this year.

For me the New Year is a little depressing because I broken all the goals I’d made last year and I didn’t check too much off my to-do list! It’s especially hard for me to plan things in detail because I’m chronically ill and I have a long commute to work. I just can’t plan anything because I don’t know what tomorrow will be like for me, and it’s hard.

The good news is, it’s actually better if we don’t plan too much. Having some long-range goals is good. But, you do want to leave room for what God wants to do in your life. So often we miss God working in our lives because it’s not in our agenda; what He’s asking us to do isn’t in our planner!

For me, when I let God do the guiding my life is so much more joyful and fruitful. He’s done some amazing things in my life–things I would have missed out on had I kept going in the direction I’d planned out.

Some think if they let God take the reins of their life, that it will be boring or that God will make them do something they aren’t good at. That is so not true. All our lives God is molding and shaping us toward something specific that only we can do. He gives us talents and spiritual gifts to show us what that road is.

That’s the exciting part–knowing that we all have a special purpose and plan to God! So, as another new year begins, why not let God handle the details of your life? See where God is at work in your life and join him!

Prayer: Dear Father, I admit that I have my own dreams and plans for my life. But I also know I can’t follow my desires and You at the same time. Help me to see where You are at work in my life so I can follow You. Amen.

Are you letting God direct your life or are you trying to hang on to the reins? Are there some areas you need to relinquish to God?
