I Asked God

Over the years we have posted this poem a few times, but it still remains a wonderful reminder of God’s faithfulness, even when He says, “no” or “not now.” God often answers our prayers, but more often then not, we find that He answers them in ways we didn’t expect or even wish. If you are praying for something right now and seem to be given the opposite from God, we hope that little poem brings you come perspective and comfort today.

“For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:8)

I asked God to take away my pride, and God said, “No.”
He said it was not for Him to take away, but for me to give up.

I asked God to make my handicapped child whole, and God said, “No.”
He said his spirit is whole, his body is only temporary.

I asked God to grant me patience, and God said, “No.”
He said that patience is a by-product of tribulation. It isn’t granted, it is earned.

I asked God to give me happiness, and God said, “No.”
He said He gives blessings. Happiness is up to me.

I asked God to spare me pain, and God said, “No.”
He said “Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me”.

I asked God to make my spirit grow, and God said, “No.”
He said I must grow on my own. But he will prune me to make me fruitful.

I asked God to help me love others, as much as He loves me.
And God said, “Ah, finally you have the idea.”

I asked for Strength. . .
and God gave me difficulties to make me strong.

I asked for Wisdom. . .
and God gave me problems to solve.

I asked for Courage. . .
and God gave me danger to overcome.

I asked for Love. . .
and God gave me troubled people to help.

I asked for Favors. . .
and God gave me opportunities.

I received nothing I wanted.
I received everything I needed.
My prayers have been answered.
