Finding Beauty in Unlikely Places

Fiona's Photo

For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, …. all things were created by him and for him. (Colossians 1:16)

Over the years that I have been taking photographs, I guess I have learned a bit about what will work and what wont. But sometimes, I just like to give it a try, on the off chance that it might work, or what I see in my mind’s eye, may come out on the camera.

While I was away recently, there were many places to take pictures of Autumn, or Fall color in the leaves of the trees, or in views over larger areas colored by the coolness of the weather.

One photo that falls into the more unusual, was just a photo I snapped of some leaves floating in the waters of a canal. It really wasn’t that pretty, but somehow it just appealed to me, as even in the time that many would consider to be the waste, after their beauty on the trees, they still seemed beautiful to me.

Sometimes I think we need to look at things differently, in order to see what God wants us to see. What can appear to be waste, or past it’s best, maybe even dead – can still hold beauty. I also love the effect you can get with dead trees on a landscape.

There is so much beauty around us, sometimes it takes my breath away. But I also know that I see so many people who miss some, or maybe even all of it.

People wonder about the number of photo albums in my house and if I ever look at them, after initially doing them. The answer is yes, I do and I still get pleasure from them, even years later. I get to remember people and places I may not see again; things my body could never do now; those times of amazement at God’s creation – and relive some of it again.

Prayer: God, I’m so grateful for eyes to see beauty in the unlikely. I’m reminded that You created all this for us to enjoy.
