Are You Watchful of How Far You Wander From God?

wanderChronic illness can become all-consuming and the result can be that we sometimes spiritually wander too far away from God. Diane asks “are you aware of just how far you are going?”

“Some wandered in the desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle” . . . “Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for mankind, for He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things” (Psalm:107: 4, 8-9).

The other day while on a walk with my friend we saw several newly hatched sandhill cranes, in the yard of her neighbor’s. They were plucking away, following their parents, as they learned to dig for bugs or other tasty treats to eat–learning the life long process of survival.

I enjoyed watching them, their fuzzy new bodies, small and frail, determined to keep up with their much larger parents. They wandered here and there, but were always checking to see where ‘Mom and Dad’ were.

If they were too far, they’d quickly scurry on back to be with in a safe and comforting distance, knowing that they would be protected . . . loved.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we chose to do the same with our Heavenly Father?

To recognize that in each circumstance we encounter, we are also learning skills for survival for life here on earth?

That though we may be living in these frail bodies, that often need protection, comfort, nutrition, both physical and spiritual?

If we would continually check to see how far we have wandered, sometimes unknowingly, and scurry on back close to our Lord, He is there waiting for us, ready with open heart and arms.

He will fill us and satisfy our thirst and hunger–not just with the fruits of this world that our body needs for survival physically–but more importantly, with His love and Spirit to satisfy our soul.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the way You teach. I’m always so amazed that You can show me in the most beautiful and simple ways, how very much You love me and want to instill in me Your truths and wisdom. Help us all, Lord, not to wander. Help us to constantly check to see where we are and then scurry back close to You so that we will be safely within Your grasp, ever filled with Your Holy Spirit. Amen.
