Has Illness Left You Feeling Helpless And Alone?

Is God really beside us when we feel alone and as though no one understands what we are going through? Karlton shares.

“Arise, Lord! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless” (Psalm 10:12).

Few things affect us as much as feeling helpless and alone. Helplessness can rob us of hope, courage, and the strength to persevere. Knowing that a loved one, a friend, someone is there to help us when we are feeling down-or when we are literally down on the ground and cannot get back up on our own–having such help in our difficulties is priceless.

Even those times when we find ourselves in a hospital room, recovering from some illness or perhaps surgery, there is comfort in knowing that if we press a button or call out for help that someone will soon arrive to offer aid.

The difficulty comes during those times when no one is around, when we find ourselves alone. Then helplessness and loneliness draw near and can feel overwhelming, causing fear that can become crippling. It robs us of the ability to reason and stay rational about our circumstances.

The Christian needs to understand that there is never a time when we are completely alone. The servants of God, the holy angels, watch over and minister to God’s children. And the Lord resides in and among His people.

The presence of God’s Spirit dwells within every believer. We may at times feel lonely and helpless, but in truth we are never really alone or helpless.

Our prayers activate God’s angels, bringing help and aid. God’s Spirit brings us peace and comfort in all our troubles. And we need to be willing to ask for help from our brothers and sisters in Christ when need arises. We are all in this together as part of God’s family.

Helplessness and loneliness will affect us all at some point in our lives. It is easy to give in to these dread feelings, but the reality is that those who belong to God will find away through loneliness and past helplessness, because our Father looks out for His children. Call upon that birthright when you find yourself in need.

Prayer: Dear Lord, our afflictions can leave us feeling helpless and alone, but do not let us forget that as Your children we are never truly alone, that help is just a prayer away. Amen.

It is from the movie Alone, Yet Not Alone and that is also the title of the song. As you may know, Joni, who is a quadriplegic has significantly limited lung capacity due to her disability.
