“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17).
Sometimes I feel like this life of chronic illness and disability is a never-ending guessing game. I keep trying to adapt, find a new rhythm, but the rules keep changing on me.
Learning your new activity level is hard! It can be cringe-worthy as you wait to see what will set your body off. It’s especially hard when no day is the same as the one before. How are we supposed to find a “new norm” when the rules are constantly changing on us with no warning?
I was bemoaning this fact with a dear friend this past week. I said, “That’s what makes chronic illness so hard, I think. It’s impossible to really adjust when nothing is a constant anymore. I don’t know about you, but I crave a little constant. Okay, a lot of constant, but I’d settle for a smidge at this point.”
My friend, she gets it. She lives it, too. We met right here on Rest Ministries, in fact.
And here is what she replied: “Jesus is a constant! He’s more than a smidge.”
My heart went flippety-flop. Then it settled and smiled.
She’s right. Jesus is our constant in this life of no rules and crazy changes. And oh, He’s so much more than a smidge. He’s everything, just everything. And He’s all ours.
Prayer: Lord God, You are the giver of every good and perfect gift. We can’t even grasp Your great love for us. Thank You for Jesus and all that He means to us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
