”Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life” (Proverbs 13:12).
In Greek philosophy there is this precept:
Take things as they are, not as you wish them to be.
Frequently I get down about things, and even depressed because I am hung up on how I want things to be, rather than accepting things as they are.
We can get so laser focused and obsessed about how things should be that we lose our joy, and quench our hope. We can slip into depression by refusing to accept things as they are, and mourning our losses of what might have been.
It is a terrible mistake to base our happiness on circumstances, events, or things. For the moment that circumstances change, events go awry, or things disappoint us, we lose our joy and can spiral into disappointment and even despair.
No one likes disappointment. But when you are already down by illness and disease, when your mental and emotional state is fragile from continued strain, disappointed hopes can be especially devastating and crippling.
We must continually remind ourselves that events and circumstances here are going to be overturned there. Over “there” when all is said and done, Jesus will set everything aright, He will place things in order, and He will give us rewards for our suffering here on this earth.
Until we cross over we can guard our hearts and minds by accepting our temporary circumstances. We can know that yes, this is how things are right now, but something better is coming down the road. Today we may be disappointed. Tomorrow we will be rewarded.
You may feel weighed down by disappointment, by focusing on what might have been. I encourage you to look to the Lord to help you endure today, while knowing there is a better tomorrow coming.
Prayer: Dear Lord, these momentary afflictions do not seem light and temporary, yet deep down we know they will not last. Help us to never forget the end of the story, and that You are the Author and bringer of the glory awaiting us. Amen.

This is For King and Country singing the song “Steady.” Whatever is going on in your life, whatever your struggles are today, it is good to know that God is and will be steady through it all. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
The lyrics to this song share how God is steady through whatever we face, so there is no need to run or hide from our circumstances, but just accept them as they are and expect God to meet us there. Thank goodness! -Lisa
