Does Illness Make You Feel Useless to God?

imageIt is natural to feel useless to Jesus, but His favor may surprise us. Karlton shares.

”David asked, ‘Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?’” (2 Samuel 9:1).

One day can run into the next with little change. You are ill today, ill tomorrow, and so it goes, unchanging, unending, and with little to show for it. So is life with disability and illness.

It seems we never accomplish much of anything, never doing much to affect the world around us, and there is nothing to show how we made our mark upon the world. We feel discouraged, and even that we are not much use as Christians.

After all, when are in wheelchairs and our sick beds, how much can we accomplish, what have we achieved for the Lord?

In the Bible Mephibosheth was disabled from the time he was a child. He could not accomplish much of anything, yet he ate at the king’s table. And when others were faithless and turned against King David, Mephibosheth remained faithful, even when he was accused of faithlessness.

Some people think we are faithless because we are ill, or that we have done something to deserve our fate. Yet we eat at the King’s table, and when others become faithless, we can show our King our faithfulness even in the midst of our weakness and disability.

Maybe you feel like you are not accomplishing much, just taking up space at the table. But I would remind you that our King has chosen you to show His favor upon. You can do something, you can remain faithful, and you can remain grateful for the unmerited favor of the King.

In this world many of us have been left broken and feeling useless. But it is not what we can do for the Lord, but what He has already done for us that matters. For our part we must remain faithful, and trust our fate to Him.

Prayer: Dear Lord, life has broken us and made us to feel useless. Help us to remain faithful to You, and to let our love for You shine brightly in this broken world. Amen.
