The Vicissitudes Of Life

imageHow can we trust God, rather than the vicissitudes? Karlton explains.

”The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all” (Psalm 34:19).

I like the word “vicissitude.” Vicissitude means “a change of circumstances or fortune, typically one that is unwelcome or unpleasant.” I don’t always like what vicissitude brings my way, but I like that it reminds me of the fickleness of life, that changes of fortune can affect us all, and we should be prepared for that reality.

Sometimes the vicissitudes of life are painful. We make plans, we take actions, and we move down certain paths thinking we know the way forward. Then vicissitudes come along and wreck it all. Vicissitudes humble us and remind us that we are human.

Difficult twists and turns in life can drive us into the arms of our Father. When we realize that we are ill equipped for the changes that come our way, for the crippling challenges in our path, we become less self-reliant. We more dependent upon the one who can help us through, enabling us to overcome what fate brings our way.

Only the Lord can deliver us from our troubles.

We like to think we are in control of our lives. We want to believe we are the master of our fate. The truth is we haven’t a clue about what might be awaiting us around the corner, or what tricks life may play upon us. We walk blindly down a path strewn with razor blades, and if not for God, we would be completely helpless and hopeless.

Yet we are not alone. Jesus is the master of our fate, and despite what appears to be insurmountable troubles, we know from experience that the Lord can and will deliver us.

The vicissitudes of life may have you down right now. We all experience that feeling of helplessness in the face of terrible circumstances, yet we have an Advocate.

Call upon Jesus, invite Him to lead you through the vicissitudes of your life.

Prayer: Dear Lord, life gets us down with its difficult twists and turns, help us through these trying times. Amen.

Hawk Nelson sings “Drops in the Ocean” in this video. It explains how God never leaves our side, He is always there to offer comfort–or forgiveness–whichever we may need. There is no reason for us to hide from Him or give up in Him. Hoping this comforts you today. -Lisa
