When God’s plans change everything you were certain of about your life, do you respond as Mary? Fiona shares.
“For the Mighty One has done great things for me–Holy is His name” (Luke 1:49).
Luke’s Gospel tells the stories of Elizabeth and Mary finding out they were to give birth to very unexpected children. There’s a verse that we’re probably familiar with, but maybe don’t remember it is written here. The verse is Luke 1:37 “For nothing is impossible with God.”
Even though Mary was only a teenager she showed such maturity in her response. In verse 38, she responds, “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.”
Then a little later when Mary and Elizabeth meet, Elizabeth says, “Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!” (V. 45).
Mary’s response is a beautiful song that includes the affirmation in the above verse.
In my church, we recently had a singer perform, and she talked about how she’d come to a point where she felt she needed to produce her first real Christian album. She’s well known on stage and in concert and while she sings Christian songs, she’s probably not known as a “Christian performer.”
Now, along with the Salvation Army Staff Band, she’s produced an album she wants to be inspiring and uplifting, but mostly an evangelism tool to reach out to those who don’t know God personally.
As I listened, I thought of Mary and her acceptance and response to something so incredibly life-changing. Then I remembered those times I’ve felt God wanting me to do what I felt uncomfortable about, didn’t want to do, or didn’t think I could do.
Did I respond willingly like Mary? Did I remember nothing is impossible with the help of the Mighty One? Maybe not always–but I want to. . .
Prayer: Mighty God, help me and others who read this today, to recall Mary’s willing response and to trust that You will accomplish in us what You have said You will. When we are insecure about what You call us to do, may we remember that You have helped us in the past and take that confidence with us into the future. Amen.
