“When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever” (Proverbs 10:25).
The New Living Translation (NLT) reads this verse this way: “When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation.”
You know what I think? I think I’ve gotten it wrong.
See, I’ve mistaken “a lasting foundation” for a life of blue skies.
How about you?
We are promised a lasting foundation–an eternal one–one that cannot be shaken.
“When the storms of life come. . .” Notice, it doesn’t say if–it says when.
“Storms are coming.” You may be in the midst of one right now. And more are probably on the horizon.
They’ll soak us to the skin with cold, fat drops of rain. They’ll blow our hair all asunder and drop the temperature till we’re shivering and pale. They’ll shake the ground with thunder and deafen us to the soothing voice of our Savior.
Because He never promised us that we’d not see storms, not have to live right through them, not suffer in their midst.
But we can know, with utter certainty, that while the wicked will be whirled away, but we will have a lasting foundation.
Tether yourself to Him. Use chains instead of rope. Curl up under that solid overhang and hunker down till the wind blows through.
You can make it. You are not alone.
Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are His” (2 Timothy 2:19a).
Prayer: Faithful Lord, I know that You never leave me. Let me trust You through every storm. Thank You for being such a strong and trustworthy foundation. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

What do you use to tie yourself to the Lord when the storms come?
Storms seem to roll in one after another sometimes, don’t they? Some even stay for years. Despite being told to not be surprised by the suffering we will experience here on earth, we still feel torn apart by them. But we don’t have to be. Shelly thought this song, “How Firm a Foundation” by Chelsea Moon w/ the Franz Brothers was a good fit, as we hang on for the ride, all while keeping our foundation in Christ. It is a beautiful folk and blues style of music we think you will enjoy. -Lisa
