No Need To Panic With God As My Driving Instructor

drivingDo you easily slip into worry about the future or even things happening today which you cannot control? Kerryn shares.

“But you will not leave in haste or go in flight; for the Lord will go before you, the God of Israel will be your rear guard” (Isaiah 52:12).

It’s easy to get into a panic when meeting with a medical specialist that indicates that some major invasive surgery needs to be done. Then they list the possible complications!

I felt myself going steadily into more and more of a panic state. Clearly I was losing sight of the fact that God is the Master Physician.

Tonight I prayed, asking for God’s help to calm the raging thoughts roaring through my brain. Interestingly He took me to a memory from about 36 years ago!

I was learning to drive and it was my first lesson with a paid instructor, who picked me up before school.

Driving in my parents automatic car, the instructor knew I’d already had some basic lessons from my parents. He calmly instructed me where to drive, so I obediently and trustingly followed his instructions.

Before long, I was driving into peak hour traffic on one of the major roads in our city. To say I was terrified and in a panic was an understatement! However, the instructor’s voice was calming and helped me to focus.

What he had to say next has never left me and was important again today, with new meaning.

“Driving in any traffic, whether a quiet road with no cars or a major road with peak hour traffic, is always the same. You need to watch the car in front, the car behind and the cars either side of you. Don’t focus further afield.”

Somehow that was calming. Both his firm steady voice and his clear, simple instructions.

How like every situation this is! We need to listen to the Lord’s calming voice with his clear and simple instructions. No need to focus further afield. God will go before us and be our rear guard too.

Prayer: When I’m in a panic, help me to hear Your clear and simple instructions, through Your Word and in prayer. Thank You that You are my Master Physician and my Driving Instructor! Amen.

What lessons has God given you to calm you in times of panic? How does that Driving Instructor image speak to you?

Russ Lee sings “Live What I Believe” in this song. The lyrics speak of how life may not always be how we imagined, there will be times when we aren’t sure about which way to go. But we can choose to live what we believe. When we live what we believe rather than what we feel we are much better at handing God the wheel. Enjoy. -Lisa
