“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:20-21).
The world lures us into buying the “must haves!” Advertisements tell us to buy the latest car, a bigger house, and more important “stuff” to fill it lavishly.
Illness reduces our needs for the “must haves.” It distils our choices to what is important, rather than what the world wants us to have.
What if you had to make a choice of your treasured possessions in the blink of an eye?
Today I was suddenly awakened, after minimal sleep, to a terrifying choice . . . stay or evacuate? We had to decide quickly, due to two fires threatening us from both sides.
Our family have discussed this scenario often, as we live in a dangerous fire district in South Australia. It’s simple; stick to the plan to stay and fight! However, with the phone ringing constantly and text messages from the Country Fire Service and friends and family it wasn’t that easy. Panic caused ever-changing decisions.
With my husband away, we decided it was too dangerous and to go . . . now! There was only a moment to decide, after a fleeting prayer. All four had to fit in the car, with the cat, so bring nothing too big.
Once safely driving out of the fire zone to my brother’s home, we prayed again and discussed our choices. None of us regretted what we’d saved and it was very little. Our lives were most important. We all agreed that if we lost everything and we were safe, we’d cope.
Safely at my brother’s home another discussion ensued. Would we take different things if we did this again? No! There was very little of great value that couldn’t be replaced. Yet our house is full of “stuff.”
I’m reminded again of the word the Lord gave me for this year: simplify!
Prayer: Lord, help me to keep a Godly perspective about what is worth treasuring. Amen.

Where are your most treasured possessions? Have you ever considered what you pour your heart into?
All success in this world is built on what we do so it can be so hard to figure out why God’s love isn’t dependent on our doing or or wins, but just on who we are–His. This song, “What If” with Jadon Lavik is a great reminds that no matter what we do, what we collect, what we succeed at gathering around us, His love doesn’t grow any more than it already is. He loves you more now–in your PJs, your unwashed hair, your unproductive day–just as much as he would if you were succeeding at every dream you ever had. How comforting! -Lisa
