“So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.” (Exodus 13:8)
How can we fight the enemy of our souls when we are too weak to leave our sickbeds? How can we stand up to our enemy when we can barely stand up at all? I think we can and must fight, but it is not a physical battle.
Spiritual warfare goes on all around us, from people trying to resist temptation, trying to retain virtue and morality in a sin-sick world, to the soul standing in the balance between heaven and hell. We can look at spiritual challenges as a chance to engage the enemy, or we can retreat from the battlefield.
In wartime the general send seasoned troops into the field, knowing they have been battle-tested and are trustworthy. I think in the same way those of us who have long endured illness and hardship, and have survived many trials, we too are battle-tested. God can count on us in difficult circumstances. We have the experience and knowledge that our weakened physical state belies.
Prayer and the Word of God are our weapons of warfare. Added to them are faith and confidence in God’s ability and awesome power to work through us. We may be no match physically to the might of our enemy, but our spiritual weapons are strong, and our God overcomes through us, even in our weakened state.y
Ask God to show you how to further His kingdom and diminish the power of our enemy on this earth. Be willing to help and pray for those who are hurting, and share your testimony of God’s faithfulness and His work in your life.
All around us are hurting people, and we can relate because of our own pain. Help lift others up just as God holds you up.
Prayer: Father, remind us that You are all powerful, and Your power lives in us, Your children. Amen.
