Can We Sing “Blue Skies and Rainbows” When Skies Are Dark?

rainbowsIs it possible to be too cheery about our illness singing about blue skies and rainbows? Shelly shares her outlook.

“Above the vault over their heads was what looked like a throne of lapis lazuli, and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man. I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him.

Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking.” (Ezekiel 1:26-28)

The other day my little girl was going through the house singing “Blue Skies and Rainbows.” Not once, not twice, but all day. It brought back memories. When I was young that was my very favorite song. I sang it with such abandon and joy. But this day it brought only the pain of my reality.

Blue Skies. Grumble, rumble, mumble. . . Where do you see any blue skies around here? Oh yeah, sure, it’s all blue skies and tweeting birds! Nary a cloud in the sky, just pure dee blue. Ha!

(Do you sense my sarcasm here?)

. . . And rainbows? Gripe, moan, groan. . . Oh yeah, all we’re missing here is the sunshine and lollipops! Right. Beautiful colors and softly playing happy music. Surrounded by nothing but sweetness and joy!

(more sarcasm)

And sunbeams from heaven. Oh, well, there’s the sunshine. Thanks, Lord, for that sense of humor! Guess I’m not missing it after all. But not just any old sunshine, noooo, not for me! I get sunbeams from heaven! Yeah, yeah, that’s why my future’s so bright–I gotta wear shades!

Are what I can see when my Lord is living in me… Wait, what? Are what I can see when my Lord is living in me. Huh.

I know that Jesus is well and alive today, He makes His home in my heart. Wow, which is why I can see the blue skies and. . . oh, wow. . .

Never more will I be all alone since He promised me that we never would part. I can endure the rain, Lord Jesus, when You are with me. Fulfill Your promise, Lord, and help me to see the rainbows.

Prayer: Blue skies and rainbows and sunbeams from heaven are what I can see when my Lord is living in me! I know that You, Jesus, are well and alive today. You make Your home in my heart. Never more will I be all alone since You promised me that we never would part! Thank You, Lord. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
