If My Body Doesn’t Work Well, Can I Still Be Useful to God?

bodyIf some of our ‘parts’ aren’t in the best working order, can we still do what God has planned for us? Shelly shares.

“. . . we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.” (Ephesians 4:15-16)

I came across this verse in my daily Bible reading this week. “We are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ. . .” Yes, I can see that.

“From whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies. . .”Okay, that makes sense.

“According to the proper working of each individual part.” Ha! Let’s read that again.

The proper working of each individual part. How long has it been since I’ve had proper working parts? I got caught up in this part of the verse, simply could not move past it. What did I care what the rest of the verse said, when I obviously didn’t fit the mold of this section? Whatever crescendo this verse is building toward, it isn’t addressed to me! How could it be? It’s addressed to those with properly working parts! Count me out.

But wait, now I have to re-evaluate. Much prayer is needed, and much soul searching. And do you know why? Because I am looking at this from my self-centered place where everything is about my physical state, and I cannot imagine still being useful. If I drop the lens and look at it from God’s perspective, I can clearly see that this verse is referring to the Body of Christ.

The. Body. Of. Christ.

Of which–guess what?–I am a properly working individual part! Praise God! Through Christ, I am an indispensable part of a functioning body, with properly working parts–all of them! Even the part that is me. Now let’s finish that verse.

“Causes the growth of the body.” Wow! And here’s the kicker. . . “For the building up of itself in love.” That’s the function of my new body in Christ.

I am a properly working individual part, doing my best to work into Christ. I am fitted and held together by these other members who are part of this body. And they need me just as much as I need them! We are a beautiful, healthy, fully-functioning form, and we are building in love.

Isn’t that a gorgeous picture? Me–me!–as a necessary part of a body that is working to build the love of Christ through His body. And He couldn’t do it without. . . me. And now, I can’t stop smiling.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You ask me to be a part of Your body–me! Thank You, Lord, for this trust that You show me. Help me to know that You never make mistakes. If You think I can do this, it would be my honor. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

What parts do you long to see the Lord restore in the Kingdom to come? How can He use those parts now as a part of His body, for His glory?

Shelly thought you would like this song, “Get Down” with the group, Audio Adrenaline. It has quite a beat and is not your typical worship song, so some of you may say, “Oh, this is too loud for me.” But if you are hesitant to watch the videos we recommend because they are a bit on the quiet and conservative side, you may just love this one. This is the kind of song I would blast in my car when I needed to remember God has it all under control and I need to celebrate it, not lament about it. Hope it blesses you. -Lisa
