God’s Yoke Is Easy, So Why Do I Work So Hard?

When our illness makes us work so hard to have a life and deal with pain, how do we find the rest that God promises us? Kerryn explains. . .

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30).

Almost daily I hear:

“Work hard and you can achieve anything!”
“I’m working hard to achieve my goals!”
“Success only comes through hard work!”

Just as my health was dramatically declining, I attended a weekend seminar about achieving your goals, based on Biblical principals. This was a treat, as I’ve always been driven to achieve.

I was re-attending this excellent course, so the first familiar activity gave me confidence. “Cross the room, one at a time, in a different way to everyone else.” Easy! Everyone was clapping and cheering. The most energetic moves received the loudest response. My energy was already waning, but I knew what was expected. . . from the crowd! Work hard and receive adulation.

I was in!

Before long my body was getting tired, really tired. I was on the beginnings of chronic fatigue syndrome and my limbs were telling me so, even though I wasn’t diagnosed at this stage.

I watched carefully, while waiting for my next turn. People were sweating, taking off layers and limbering up. I started praying for the Lord to help me. Instantly the passage from Matthew came to mind, along with two special words. . . work easy. How could I have forgotten? This was the whole point of the exercise!

I thought up easier moves, but just as I’d start I’d add something, so that I didn’t look. . . lazy! A battle was on!

The whole point of the exercise was becoming clearer and clearer, along with God’s voice. The problem was that a lifetime attitude and others expectations cluttered it. God was speaking very clearly to choose between the hard way or the easy way, not just in this, but in everything!

His yoke is easy and His burden is light! Finally, I let go and used tiny little hand movements, while crossing. I was going God’s way.

I had no idea then that He was preparing me for a time of illness. Work easy constantly came to mind over the next few months, as my body declined to a bed-ridden state. This was not about being lazy. This was about finding easier ways to do things that would have the same end result anyway.

Almost daily I’m reminded of His easy yoke and light burden to rest my body and soul, during this time of illness. There are many ways to do the same thing. My job is to choose!

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your Word that administers Your truth to drown out the world’s shouting. Help me to choose Your ways to bring rest to my weary body and soul. Thank You that Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. Amen.

About the Author:
Kerryn Wright lives with her family amongst the gum trees in South Australia. She was a special education teacher prior to chronic illnesses. Her husband is carer for three of their family, who have chronic illnesses and disabilities. God has always guided them through life’s challenges, often in surprising ways.

Has the Lord shown you easier ways to achieve the same end result? How does His “easy yoke” make a difference to your body and soul? What else can you simplify in your life, to be made “easy,” to protect your body and health?

Do you need a moment of rest? This is the “Psalm 62 Song” By Aaron Keyes with lyrics. I know that Kerryn often has difficulty listening to music, so I hope this song blesses her and many others as you as–even if you turn the volume down–you can enjoy the beautiful photos with the scripture. Take a few minutes–right now–to stop and rest. We were made to rest and soak up strength of time with our Lord. -Lisa
