Where Are Your Roots Planted To Hold You During The Storms?

”]“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” (Colossians 2:6-7)

As I drove home one gorgeous winter evening, I marveled God’s creation – the pearly white snow, the brightly colored birds, the serene sunset, and. . . the totally one-sided tree! I stared at that tree because it looked so out of place. Because of the main power lines, this tree was trimmed. As a result one side was full but the other side wasn’t – a strange sight for sure!

I was surprised the tree was still standing because it was so “top heavy” on that one side, but it was straight as could be. Then I remembered that it’s the root system that supports the tree. The roots grow outward into the ground and support the rest of the tree. Some roots grow up to three times the spread of the branches. Amazing! What a beautiful illustration of what God does for us. It doesn’t matter how limited we are physically or how busy we get in our day-to-day lives – if we are grounded in the Word of God and our relationship with Him is at the base of our lives, we will make it.

It’s easy to look at our circumstances and be disheartened. By our own eyes we appear to be one-sided. But, if our roots grow deep into God and not into the world, we will remain straight. “As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.” (Psalm 18: 30-32, NIV)

Prayer: God, I am going through a really hard time right now. Maybe I even feel mad at You for allowing certain things to happen. Help me seek Your word by reaching for my Bible and start reading—even when I don’t feel like it. I know Your Word is holy and can touch my life and refresh my spirit. Please be my foundation of my house.
