Take Heart, God Understands The Affliction of Illness

“Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I am in distress;
my eyes grow weak with sorrow,
my soul and my body with grief.

My life is consumed by anguish
and my years by groaning;
my strength fails because of my affliction,
and my bones grow weak.” (Psalm 31:9-10)

Have you ever felt like these words written by David? I’d have to say that I have. Maybe for a very different reason to that David was in, but still, distress; sorrow; grief; anguish; groaning; weakness. That happens.

I often think that David seems to express himself so well in the Psalms – he expresses his times of joy, of pain, or fear – and he had lots to be afraid of! Yet, I’m encouraged in reading his words, that he still continues to give praise to his Lord and to thank him for so much.

These verses above are surrounded by affirmative statements, like:

Verse 6b-7: “I trust in the Lord. I will be glad and rejoice in your love, for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul.”

Verse 14-15a: “But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, ‘You are my God.’ My times are in your hands;”

Verse 19: “How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you,”

When life seems tough, I like to read the Psalms, written by someone who wasn’t afraid to tell God how he felt – even in his darkest times. David was human – just like me. He did some great things, but made some bad choices too – yet God still describes him as “a man after my own heart”

For those of us with chronic illness, or with trials in life, there will be tough times. But God will be there still, in fact I think sometimes we are more aware of Him and our need of His grace, during those tough times.

Prayer: Lord, I want to remember to be able to continue to say along with David, the encouragement in verse 24 to: “Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.”

  1. Lisa Copen posted a link to this devotional on Twitter and I clicked through. One of my favorite things about the Psalms in David’s honesty, too. I love that God chose to include the prayer journal of an early Christian in His Word. It’s given me so much encouragement on many dark days. This is a beautiful devotional, Fiona. Keep writing and shining your light for Jesus.

    Hugs dear sister in Christ,

    Debra
